22 Questions to Ask Your Potential College Roommate

I know looking for a college roommate is very stressful, especially your freshman year- the year your roommate is probably the most important. In an effort to relieve some of that stress, here's a list of questions I recommend asking from most the basic and preliminary, to the more detailed ones people don't think of.

  1. What do you like to do for fun?
  2. What are you majoring in/thinking of majoring in?
  3. Why did you choose ___ school?
  4. Are you a morning person?
  5. Are you planning on rushing?
  6. What are most you looking forward to in college?
  7. Do you/how often do you plan to go out?
  8. What music/ tv shows/ music/ food do you like? (it can be fun to go out to eat or watch movies together)
  9. What do you see yourself doing on the weekends?
  10. How clean/organized are you?
  11. Which dorm are you interested in living in?
  12. What prioritizes do you have in picking a dorm?
  13. Are you getting a meal plan? (proximity to where they're planning on eating is often a priority)
  14. How do you feel about having friends over?
  15. Do you have any allergies? (you'll want to know if there will be certain foods you can't have in the room)
  16. What would you like the room to look like?
  17. What conditions do you like to sleep in? (temperature, how many hours, what time)
  18. How much do you like to share vs. have your own of items?
  19. What are you looking for out of a roommate?
  20. What are your major pet peeves?
  21. How much time do you plan to spend in the room?
  22. What are you not willing to negotiate on?

Bonus: Questions to ask once you have found and confirmed a roommate (these vary slightly by school and dorm, but are a good general benchmarks).
  1. Do you want to have a _____ in the room (microwave, TV, toaster, printer etc.)?
  2. Are there/ what items would you like to share? (a fridge, a microwave, a can opener, trash bags, a rug in the center of the room)
  3. What decor/theme are you thinking of?
  4. When are you planning on moving in?

Also, remember that although having a roommate and friend all in one can be fun, it's ok if you're not super close with your roommate too. Best of luck on the search.
